our story

SEAI energy show1

Mike Newham, Ross Rabette, and Aidan O’Brien, all met in Cloughjordan Co. Tipperary, having been drawn to the area at various stages. Mike, who co-founded GoCar Ireland (a car sharing company which has helped over 600 people so far avoid the burden of car ownership) wanted to explore how the learnings and opportunities from being [...]

problem – opportunity

unemployed man

Youth Unemployment: Ireland now has the second highest youth unemployment rate in Europe – Over the last six years, Ireland has seen huge changes in its economy, which has massively impacted the economic prospects of its population. Over 1 in 3 young men (aged between 18-25) are now unemployed, and many more are emigrating, as [...]

the solution

Get Started

Locally Owned Infrastructure: The proposed solution is to generate most of the communities required energy, transport fuel and food, through locally owned service companies, using proven technologies and cooperative business models. Through our experience and research, we have found that it is possible to create 1 job per 20 head of population simply by switching [...]

Our mission

Our mission is to reverse the outflow of wealth from the Irish economy through developing community supported enterprises, which will reduce energy, food and transport costs, and redirect spending power for the benefit of the local community

How do we do it?

GET Local (Formerly LocalSwitch) is a non profit Enterprise Creation Agency for the localized and low carbon economy. We help primarily unemployed people create their own enterprises, by providing a platform for them to receive inspiration, coaching, niche specific skills, start-up capital, back office services, and even customers.

What niches do we support?

Anything that builds local wealth and reduces reliance on imported energy, but primarily energy saving and substitution, local food production, and enabling of the collaborative sharing economy. The most popular examples are enterprises that concentrate on property retrofitting, woodland maintenance, tool sharing, car sharing, waste recycling and reuse, and community supported agriculture

    Our re-branding

The last year has really been a roller-coaster ride, and the action plan has steadily evolved. Initially we started out as an agency that would map local resources, and help people get local energy and food projects going. What evolved was something more finely tuned around being an agency for enterprise creation, a way of making happen [...]

How to start a Community Supported Kitchen business (CSK)

As times get tougher, more people are looking for ways to make some extra money. One excellent way to do this, particularly for people who want to work part-time, is to form a workers co-op and begin a community supported kitchen. This idea has really started to take legs recently; see here, here and here for [...]

How would you like to have these nine new-economy-businesses in your area?

Cheaper, better, handier? Depends on what you want. But in my experience of LocalSwitch so far, here are some of my favourites: 1. Tool and car sharing hub This is not a big job creator, but it can dramatically reduce the cost of living (up to thousands of euro per year per household participating). There are [...]

How to access affordable wood fuel from local sustainable forests

The last five years has seen a dramatic rise in the use of wood for home heating, as fossil fuel prices have risen inexorably. At the same time woodland owners are organizing themselves into groups and cooperatives to be able to handle this demand. Examples include Western forestry co-op  in Sligo, Donegal woodland owners society, and Greengrove wood growers co-op [...]

Re-using old factories to create new jobs

In this weeks post, I’d like to explore a seemingly paradoxical situation whereby we might be able to turn some of our food processing industry away from being a massive energy importer, into a net zero energy consumer. This would hopefully stem some of the massive job losses we have recently seen in this sector, [...]

How to cut imported energy by 80%

In last weeks post, we looked at the possibilities for creating local jobs, and how this would begin with a local catalyst who initiates new projects; firstly, the easier revenue generating community energy projects, which in turn help finance the next layer; the worker owned CO-OPs. Then we have the foundations for a job creating [...]

How to create 50 jobs in a small town

I had a conversation with a friend a couple of weeks back about what we are doing at Localswitch – We  talked about a town close to us who have recently set up a LocalSwitch Association. The Borrisokane LSA have given us a mandate to help them create 50 jobs, with a population of 1200 [...]
